Cairo & Pyramids

-
We can marvel endlessly at the stony heights of the Pyramids of Giza, the gravesites of Ancient Egypt's mighty pharaohs, built for eternity over 4000 years ago
-
The imposing Citadel of Saladin takes us on a journey to the middle ages as we gaze over all of Cairo
-
The venerable halls of the Egyptian Museum invite us to study their thousands of artefacts and the famed golden mask of Tutankhamun
-
Within the shadowed ruins of Memphis, we will explore the echoes of Ancient Egypt's long-time capital
-
Ancient Egypt comes to meet us in a more tangible, touchable way on a visit to a papyrus factory
-
Egyptians say "once you have drunk the water of the Nile you will always come back": we can appreciate Cairo from the vantage point of its golden waters as we ride a traditional felucca at sunset
-
The Saqqara Necropolis with the oldest complete stonebuilding complex known to mankind, Old Cairo's Coptic Cairo with its Hanging Church, colourful Khan al Khalili Bazar, and the monumental Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan are more highlights on our visit to Cairo, “The City of all Cities"

Luxor & Valley of the Kings

-
"Where is Thebes in all her glory, with her gates of beaten gold?" Like 19th century poet Mathilde Blind, we will marvel at the Ancient city of Thebes (today's Luxor) and the sweeping columns of hierogylphs of its most famous sight, Karnak Temple Complex
-
Nearby, graceful Luxor Temple echoes grandeur, having been the probable site of the pharaohs' coronations
-
Poetry and colour abound in the Valley of the Kings, the royal burial ground for pharaohs like Tutankhamun, Seti I, Ramses V and Ramesses VI; this mysterious place remains an active archaelogical site until today
-
Closeby captivates us the place of beauty, Ta-Set-Neferu, the Valley of the Queens, and its gem, the star-spangled tomb of pharaoh Ramesses II's beloved Queen Nefertari
-
After our visit to the tombs, we can learn how the bodies of kings and queens were prepared for the journey to the afterlife in the Mummification Museum
-
An architectural jewel awaits us in the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, the famous long-reigning female pharaoh
-
Luxor truly teems with sights: The temple sites of Medinet Habu and The Ramesseum, the tombs of El-Assasif and the Luxor Museum as well as the Ancient craftsmen' village site of Deir el-Medina await our visit

Aswan & Abu Simbel

-
We can indulge in many stories about the monumental rock-cut temple of Ramesses II, Abu Simbel, and all of them are literally moving:
-
On Feb 22 and Oct 22 the sun's rays illuminate the faces of Ramesses and the sun gods within the temple which normally sit in darkness
-
At the feet of the four 20-metres-high statues of Ramesses II flanking the entrance (he is wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt) sits the entire family; namely smaller statues of his wife, his mother, sons and daughters
-
The entire temple was moved to higher ground in the 1960s due to the building of 111-metres high Aswan Dam, which is an interesting sight to visit in its own right as part of Egypt's modern history
-
-
Nearby Aswan, southern Egypt’s strategic and commercial hub since antiquity, holds a key piece to understanding Ancient Egyptian craftmen: the largest known Ancient Obilisik, work on which was abandoned but which offer us valuable lessons on artisanship
-
The historical botanical garden island in the Nile, Geziret En Nabatat, is a green breath of fresh air for us closeby
-
Are you a big fan of Cleopatra and Hellenistic Egypt? Moving downstream from Aswan on our visit towards Luxor, we can visit the small but precious temples of this period like the Kom Umbo Temple, The Temple of Horus at Edfu and the Temple of Esna

Alexandria & The Citadel of Qaitbay

-
Alexander is supposed to have said that "Alexandria is the hymn of age": indeed much history passed by its sea-soaked and sun-washed walls; we can estimate parts of it, as we look over the stormy seas from the Citadel of Qaitbay and envision the Lighthouse of Alexandria in whose exact location the Citadel was built
-
From the lofty heights of the Citadel of Qaitbay we go to the furthest point below as we visit the Kom El Shoqafa Catacombs, considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages, and a wondrous place as you can find an eclectic mix of style in the statues that merge Greek, Egyptian and Roman influences
-
The momentous column we go to see next, Pompey's Pillar (Amud El-Sawari), is now the only witness of the site of the Ancient city's great Greco-Roman temple, the Serapeum of Alexandria; and Pompey's Pillar itself is subject to many stories through history, among those the tale of the 15th century Muslim traveller Ibn Battuta who recounted how an archer shot a rope across it in order to climb it; till now this mighty pillar remains an echo of a a time long gone by
